Steel production in Japan is continuing at a high rate due to the influence of China's booming economy. Against a background of productivity growth, recent trends of R & D in refractories technologies are shifting toward improvement of equipment availability and reliability in addition to the traditional cost reduction considerations for refractory materials. In particular, for refractories used in linings of furnaces that are in service for prolonged periods, it is not too much to say that the selection of refractories has a great influence on the furnace equipment productivity and therefore the materials selection is becoming a very important factor in the operations.
