What is refractory engineering? This depends upon who you ask. Most refractory responsibilities are within the engineering maintenance departments. If you ask a mechanical engineer he questions the unpredictability of refractories, comparing it to more predictable metallurgical characteristics. Refractory manufactures would advise that as they are produced from natural raw materials they couldn't possibly offer better tolerances / predictable behaviour characteristics.
