内容简介Permanent expansion is an irreversible dimensional increase in addition to the normal thermal expansion that refractories experience on heating to their application temperatures. This article describes several permanent expansions that are exhibited by industrial refractories. From the perspective of their fundamental causes, these permanent expansions are grouped into three categories: (i) gas evolution at high temperatures, (ii) the solid state reaction of the refractory constituents to form a new, lower density phase and (iii) the decomposition of minerals formed at high pressures. These latter form a mixture of less dense new phases and occupy a greater volume than the original mineral. In each of these categories, several refractory products are discussed and several other permanent expansions are noted.
