Chrome-containing refractories have superior mechanical properties at high temperature, excellent thermal characteristics, and chemical resistance, therefore they have been widely used as lining materials for rotary cement kilns, secondary smelting furnaces in steelmaking (for example, RH vessels), waste-melting furnaces and glass- melting furnaces, which require high corrosion resistance at high temperature. And also chrome sands, prepared by crushing and size-grading of chromite ore, are used as casting mold sand in foundries, especially those that focus on steel castings, which require high thermal resistance.But, these chrome-containing materials have a critical disadvantage because they can easily develop hexavalent chrome (Cr~(6+)), which has a serious effect on the human body, as a result of reaction with calcia (CaO) and alkaline oxides (Na_2O and K_2O) which are present in the service environment in cement-making, slagging and glass-making applications, during the life of the lining and sand. Because hexavalent chrome is easily soluble in water, it is necessary to be very careful about treating the used refractories, as well as reprocessing, and therefore as for the disposal of the used refractories it is essential to involve a qualified waste disposer, because the management after disposal should strictly comply with various regulations.
