Alumina-magnesia castables are common types of monolithic refractories that are used in steelmaking processes because of their excellent resistance to corrosion and slag penetration, due to the formation of spinel by the reaction of alumina and magnesia. Various studies have been conducted recently for the purpose of making further improvement to the properties of these castables. One published study reported that the degree of sintering of spinel can be improved by adding TiO_2 powder. So the effect of added TiO_2 on the properties of alumina-magnesia castables was studied. The paper describes the research and the resulting castable properties.
