Lightweight castables were manufactured using glass-balloons as aggregates. The glass-balloons were made using processed scrap of waste cullet produced in manufacturing plate glass. This is an environmentally conscious product oriented toward avoiding any use of ceramic fiber and/or vermiculite. Glass-balloons react with the matrix and crystallize as a consequence of high temperature. As a result, the thermal resistance is strengthened to more than 1300°C and at the same times the shrinkage behavior is suppressed because the thermal expansion coefficient is increased. This paper describes the characteristics of the castables.
