An investigation of the effects on the behavior of MgO-C brick with added Al_4SiC_4 resulted in the following conclusions: (1)Above 1000°C the mass and strength of MgO-C brick increases gradually and the porosity decreases with addition of Al_4SiC_4 (2)Al_4SiC_4 reacts with CO gas to form spinel (MgAl_2O_4) and SiC above 1000°C. The product SiC also reacts with CO gas to form forsterite (Mg_2SiO_4) above 1200°C. These reactions involve an increase of mass and volume which causes densification of the texture. (3)Bricks containing Al_4SiC_4 have high hydration resistance after heating because Al_4C_3 and A1N are not formed in the reaction processes. (4)It was found that Al(g), SiO(g) and Mg(g) form in the brick texture at high temperature. The gases are considered to disperse and condense in the pores and the texture is therefore densified efficiently.
