This paper will discuss the effect(s) of abrasion test conditions on the amount of abrasion with the JIS standard abrasion tester, under cold and hot conditions. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of the abrasion tester which complies with the JIS R 2252 standard test procedure; a container is attached with a Nichrome wire heater. SiC is the specified abrasive, and was used in this testing. The amount of abrasion was calculated by using the difference between the weight before and after the abrasion test. Refractory materials for the abrasion test were fired bodies of a castable refractory of chamotte (Al_2O_3: 48%, SiO_2: 40%) and a phosphate bonded-plastic refractory (Al_2O_3 : 90%, SiO_2 : 5%). The firing temperature was 1000°C.
