Porous ceramics serve various functions, such as a lightweight material, an insulation, a separation, and a bio-carrier. As an insulation, one of the most important functions is to help solve problems related to global warming and the exhaustion of fossil fuel. The main components of heat insulating materials used in the manufacturing industry are alumina and silica. There are several methods for manufacturing heat insulating materials, for example, making ceramic fiber from molten glass or ceramic, making porous ceramics by firing a green body containing combustible materials, and making porous ceramics by firing a green body containing micro-size hollow bodies.
