SiC is characterized by good properties such as non-wettability by slag and high thermal conductivity. These features of SiC are used for blast furnace trough refractories for the purpose of improving both the corrosion resistance (against blast furnace slag) and the spalling resistance. However, in recent years, the operating temperature of molten pig iron has tended to increase, and on that account a problem has developed, because there has been a decrease of the spalling resistance associated with the reduction of SiC, due to increased oxidation. The authors conducted a study to improve the spalling resistance by coating alumina aggregate with pitch. This paper reports the results of the effect of pitch-coated aggregate in trough refractories.
