The effects of V_2O_5-SiO_2 addition on the fired behavior of SiC refractory materials were studied. Green bodies were fabricated by aqueous slip casting with sodium silicate as a dispersant from coarse and fine particles of SiC containing SiO_2 and V_2O_5 as bonding agents. In general, slip casting gave a high green body packing density compared with pressing. The fired SiC compacts with 1.0 mass% SiO_2 and 1.5 mass% V_2O_5, which were the optimal amounts of bonding agents, fired at 1000-1400 deg C showed bending strengths above 150 MPa, which was almost double that without V_2O_5. Microstructural observations using SEM-EDX and XRD measurement indicated that the enhancement of strength could be attributed to the formation of adherent cristobalite around the SiC particles. Cristobalite was formed mainly by the reaction of SiC and V_2O_5.
