The present study determined the phase diagram of the CaO-SiO_2-CaF_2 system, which gives the principle for the design of the mold powder for the continuous casting process. The phase diagram clearly indicates liquidus lines and crystallization temperatures including cuspidine. Considering that the industrial mold powder is a multi-component material containing Na_2O and Al_2O_3, the theoretical calculation of the phase diagram will be necessary. The determination of the standard Gibbs energy of formation of cuspidine, the most important material in the mold powder system, supports the phase diagram calculation and the calculation of the activities of components for CaO-SiO_2-CaF_2 system. From the calculated equilibrium partial pressures of SiF_4 and HF, it is possible to discuss the environmental problems caused by the emission of fluorine gas in the continuous casting plant. Furthermore, the author expects our phase diagrams to assist the systematic consideration of powder design as it relates to the problem of refractory corrosion and as well as viscosity and wettability to the refractory.
