The author has described oxy-fuel combustion technology and glass tank refractory materials. Another important problem is the relation between the oxygen burner and associated refractories. Even a fusion cast refractory is easily melted by an oxygen burner, and we sometime found defective glass linked to burner operation. The discussion of this problem will be presented in elsewhere. The pure oxygen combustion method for glass melting has a close relationship to the electric power cost. In Japan, glass technology with oxygen combustion started using a regenerator that is corroded during the melting operation. The melting technology was developed and improved to meet requirements for the production of cathode-ray tubes. Now, the technology advancement proceeds on the balance between production cost and quality. Environmental problems such as emissions of carbon dioxide, NOx and particulates will be important problems faced by the glass making and refractory companies.
