Although the two castable materials which were subjected to crack growth confirmation testing have the same chemical composition, the test results showed an unexpectedly large difference in cracking. Valuable information was obtained, indicating that the spalling resistance of castable refractories is not determined only by chemical composition, but is greatly affected by the amount of mixing water and also the quantity and quality of micro-additives. The research in this study focused mainly on castable materials. It was learned that the further improvement of the spalling resistance of burner tile refractories for regenerative burners requires manifold investigations of topics in addition to the quality of the material. For example, comprehensive investigations like "What is the better shape for the burner tile (unification type or separation type)?", "What is the best shape for the stud bolts?", "What is the most suitable number of stud bolts?", etc., are needed to gain a comprehensive solution for the problems, and achieve future improvements.
