内容简介A silicon carbide ceramic powder is generally fabricated from silica and carbon powder by carbothermal reduction. A complete reaction is difficult to achieve, because of incomplete mixing of powders and solid-state reaction. As a result, unreacted silica and carbon remain. A new synthesis method was developed to obtain high purity powder, that is, fabrication of precursors from liquid organic reactants containing carbon and silicon then carbothermal reduction of the precursors. We have investigated systematically the fabrication of silicon carbide ceramic powder and titanium carbide by using oxide or organo-metallic polymer as the metal source and phenolic resin as the carbon source. An advantage of these raw materials is they contain few metal impurities and are liquids at room temperature. We applied this method to produce Al_4SiC_4. The resulting single phase Al_4SiC_4 was fabricated by optimizing the initial composition and heat-treatment conditions. The formation mechanism of the Al_4SiC_4 is discussed within.
