Energy Saving of Industrial Furnace Using Thermo-View

Recently the thermal efficiency of industrial furnaces is notably increased through improvements in the heat insulation properties of refractory materials and their extension across the application region. At the beginning stage, the installation heat insulation material produces satisfactory results and the outer surface temperature of the furnaces is low (radiation heat loss is less). However, as the service time becomes long the furnace surface temperature goes up gradually and the radiation heat loss increases. These changes become more prominent and become marked with deterioration of the refractory materials. The conventional method of dealing with this phenomenon is to shut down the furnace and then design the repair based on observation of the lining situation inside the furnace. At present, by using Thermo-view it is possible for the operator to know the deterioration situation and the degree of lining degradation during operation and therefore it becomes possible to plan the repair scheme in advance of the shutdown. Thanks to this advantage the period required for repair is substantially reduced and also it is possible to reduce the high radiation heat loss resulting in energy saving (and calculated reduction in CO_2 gas emission). The method to measure the heat insulation properties using thermo-view has been proposed for the building industry". In this paper the author presents an actual example of using the method on industrial furnaces.
