Cement rotary kilns make a large contribution to environmental improvement by their capability for safe disposal of industrial wastes together with recycling. On the other hand, enforcement of the ISO 1401 articles and the escalating cost of waste disposal place a heavy burden on enterprises that handle hazardous substances. On that account, there is pressure to exclude chrome magnesia brick (Mg-Cr brick) in the lining of cement rotary kilns and replace them with chrome-free brick (Cr-free brick) as quickly as possible. Cr-free brick were introduced about 17 years ago in the burning zones of cement rotary kilns, and most of the brick are comprised of a modified magnesia spinel composition (Spinel brick). The use of Cr-free brick has rapidly increased over time, thereby diminishing the portion of installed Mg-Cr brick. The remaining Mg-Cr brick is applied mainly in high temperature zones such as the burning zone and the tire part.
