Refractories containing chromium trioxide are frequently used in waste melting furnaces because of their high corrosion resistance. But there is concern about the formation of hexavalent chromium, which is harmful to the human body. Refractories with different contents of Cr_2O_3 were evaluated in rotary corrosion and crucible tests. The leaching of hexavalent chromium from water-quenched slag produced in the corrosion tests, was evaluated by a standard leachate test.
