The results of analyses of used chrome-free bricks from the burning zone of a cement rotary kiln and also the trial of low thermal conductivity brick for the very valuable reduction in heat loss from the viewpoint of "green action" bricks for cement rotary kilns were described. Since 2000, in the wake of the rise in consciousness for green actions, the program for the realization to chrome-free installations is rapidly progressing and therefore it is thought that the full-scale chrome-free design for cement rotary kiln in Japan may surely be achieved in the near future by applying bricks of suitable quality that are well adapted for the service conditions. Also it is expected that along with complete realization of chrome-free brick and the practical use of a lot of industrial waste, the kiln operation conditions will change significantly. Accompanying such changes, refractories materials will become widely diversified and their durability will be affected to a large extent. The authors intend to continue efforts to improve of brick quality not only for durability but also with due considerations to operation and environment.
