From the comparison tests of alumina magnesia castable and alumina MTA castable, the following results were clarified. Although spalling resistance was increased with use of MTA clinker, an abnormal expansion derived from spinel formation takes place with an excess addition above 20% causing a decrease in spalling resistance. The addition of 20% MTA-D clinker increased the weight gain in the hydration test indicating reduced hydration resistance. 3) As for corrosion resistance, in comparison with alumina magnesia castable, only the mix with 10% MTA-D clinker addition showed a better result. With regard to the lack of improvement with other additions, in the case of 5% MTA clinker addition, the formation of CaO·TiO_2 was considered to be insufficient for prevention of slag penetration. Furthermore, in the case of 20% addition, although CaO·TiO_2 formation took place, the apparent porosity was increased due to the formation of spinel. The optimum addition is considered to be 10%, and an actual field test was performed with this amount. 4) By means of EPMA observation of the used castables after the actual furnace test, the formation of CaO·TiO_2 which prevented the infiltration of Fe from the slag was confirmed. In the present investigation of a field test in an actual furnace, the durability results obtained in the laboratory test were not confirmed in the field trial. However, the fact that the prevention of Fe infiltration was clearly identified has encouraged us to continue the study by increasing the number of field trials in the future.
