The present status of nuclear fusion research is briefly reviewed and recent achievements in the Large Helical Device (LHD) are presented with particular regard to plasma performance and steady state operations. The importance of research and development in the plasma facing components is explained and recent activities and results in this research field are reviewed. Experimental studies on a wide variety of tungsten materials have been carried out on their manufacturing processes, thermal characteristics and hydrogen retention. Some of the important and promising experimental results are shown for these refractory metals as a plasma facing materials.
