A new process was developed to prevent corrosion in blast furnace hearth, using chemical deposition of titanium right in the carbon refractory blocks. The carbon refractories were impregnated with a titanium-carrying solution, through open porosity. This newly-developed process is more efficient and cost effective when compared with those conventional techniques of hearth protection, by means of adding titanium to the blast furnace burden. Lab simulation results using carbon refractory hearths, with and without titanium impregnation, as well as industrial trials conducted in CSN #3 Blast Furnace hearth corroborated the efficiency of this newly-developed technique.
