With regard to the elasto-plastic properties of refractories, measuring methods and actual examples of measurements have been introduced together with FEM calculations incorporating this property. In recent years, from view point of a total structure, the role of refractories has been questioned, resulting in the recognition of the importance of simulation technology by FEM and related analyses that deal with the effects of refractory properties on the structure concerned. Furthermore, it is necessary to establish a mechanics model, which is indispensable for FEM calculation, together with an understanding of material properties. However, contrary to the situation of metals in which the relevant properties have been amply investigated, refractories exhibit non-linear mechanical property characteristics to a great extent as well as multiple-components, inhomogeneity, porosity and time-dependent property changes, etc. Therefore, it cannot be denied that our total understanding is insufficient. In comparison with the FEM calculations in the field of metals and concrete, the FEM analyses for refractories are just beginning. Henceforth, progress in the measurement of non-linear properties of refractories beginning with elasto-plastic properties and creep, together with their application is eagerly anticipated. Acknowledgements have to be given to the authors of references in which non-SI units in figures and data were changed without permission of some of the authors concerned.
