Ordinarily I have a habit of easily accepting a request for contribution, feeling I can contribute somewhat to the topic. Before starting to write, I assemble various materials relating to the topic. However I am amazed to discover, as I sit in front of a manuscript paper (a personal computer) and intend to start writing, that the materials lack supporting evidence and are not systematic. To keep the promise, I search the literature and other sources and try to write, but it does not go smoothly. Even after at last finishing the manuscript, I am asking myself why I am not able to write a little more properly. I am sunk in self-doubt, and I swear to my heart not to take on a writing request the next time, but I have made the same mistake this time once again. Forgetting my weakness in mathematics and physics, why, of all subjects, did I take on the request to contribute an essay concerning the, "Evaluation of Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Refractories - Fundamentals and Applications", the most mathematical among various disciplines concerning refractories. I was concerned that I made poor decision as I could only write from the point of view of material technologies after all. I am afraid there might be some expressions in the text that may be misunderstood as one can not evaluate refractories without experience in their actual use or that the specific refractory properties considered were not useful for the intended evaluation, but this is never explicitly stated. Refractories are in the area of non-Markov processes (see Takashi Tachibana, Bunshun, Dec. issue, 2000). On the other hand, in this ambiguous world, I therefore hope that one studies hard the fundamentals, observes the real situation and discusses the conclusions in detail.
