Currently, cement rotary kilns (hereafter, cement kilns) play an important part in the establishment of global environment protection and the Zero-Waste Economy and Society. In addition, it is required that cement kiln lining refractories should also be friendly for the environment. Magnesia-chrome bricks (hereafter, Mg-Cr bricks) used in the kiln lining produce harmful hexavalent chromium compounds during the kiln operation by reaction with alkali and lime included in cement raw materials. Special consideration is therefore required in the handling and disposal of the used bricks. In addition, during operation the cement kiln lining bricks are gradually worn and mingled with the cement. The mingled amount is small, but it is a cause of increased chrome content in the cement. The cement kiln lining must be shifted to chrome-free refractories in order to solve the above problems The present situation and the properties of chrome-free basic bricks for cement kilns were presented at the last committee. The use of new chrome-free basic bricks in practical cement kiln linings corresponding to various operation conditions and their changes were also reported~7). This paper describes the use, performance and the analysis of chrome-free basic bricks and the future direction for the development and application of new chrome-free basic bricks.
