The UCM Group, with its zirconia foundations in the former Universal Abrasives Ltd, has manufactured electro-fused zirconia for refractories and related applications for almost thirty years and over that time has grown to be one of the world's key producers of this increasingly important mineral. In recent years, by acquisition and investment, the Group has clearly demonstrated its long-term, strategic commitment to the global zirconia market. Now UCM announces another significant step down that strategic path. In 1996, UCM commissioned an innovative process for the primary stage of its zirconia production at its plant in Tennessee, U.S.A. (Universal America Inc., or U.A.I.). Recently the Group has completed a multi-million dollar investment at the plant, which has expanded the capacity and capability of the plant and now allows UCM to nominate U.A.I. as the Group's centre of excellence for the production of refractory-grade zirconia. Consequently, UCM is announcing that in a phased manner, over the next few months, manufacture of refractory-grade zirconia at the Group's factory at Unitec Ceramics Ltd. in Stafford, U.K. will cease and production will be transferred to U.A.I.
