An investigation was carried out to determine if the addition of CoO to TiO_2 and TiO_2-Al_2O_3 system materials could improve chemical stability. The characteristics of TiO_2-Al_2O_3 system materials with CoO addition were also investigated as possible refractories aggregate. The following knowledge was obtained as the results of these investigations. ① In the TiO_2 system, the effect of added CoO on the suppression of TiO_(2-alpha) production after reducing firing was confirmed. ② The addition of CoO to TiO_2-Al_2O_3 system material provided various improvements in the physical properties. Density and strength increased, porosity and thermal expansion decreased and there was improvement in spalling resistance and slag penetration resistance. The suppression effect of CoO addition on the thermal decomposition of Al_2TiO_5 after reducing firing was clarified.
