Carbon-containing slide gate plates are fired in a reducing atmosphere so that they may acquire required properties. Since a part of the carbonaceous materials vaporizes during firing and leaves a porous structure, those plates are usually impregnated to reduce porosity and increase strength. An alternative to achieve the same goal is to optimize their size compositions. It is a well-known approach, but only few attempts have been reported. The present study shows that size compositions following the closest packing theory result in dense plates without post-firing impregnation. The field test confirms that such plates perform as well as the conventional, impregnated plate.
