A new method for evaluating the penetration of molten metal into porous refractories has been developed. In the field, there is a temperature gradient along the length of a porous plug, and although this condition can't be simulated in the new method, the penetration behavior, penetration rate, etc. can be observed and measured. Such data could not be obtained with the evaluation methods available previously. The practical benefit of this new method has been determined by using it to develop an improved porous purging plug, as confirmed in field service.
