We have reported volumetric methods that utilized the quadrupole mass spectrometer to quantitatively evaluate oxidation mechanisms of silicon carbide and silicon nitride. For refractories, it is generally seen that the oxidation seems to be a kind of degradation. Some material is lost by gasification oxidation, but other materials undergo weight gain and volume expansion by the formation solid oxidation products. Changes in pore structure and chemical composition by the oxidation reaction do not always introduce degradation. Like the solid-phase oxidation, these changes may be difficult to evaluate except by volumetric measurements. It is expected that knowledge of the oxidation of important non-oxide refractories will be obtained by using volumetric evaluation methods concurrently with gravimetric methods.
