The evaluation of the mechanical spalling resistance of MgO-Sp bricks for cement rotary kiln lining and MgO-C lining bricks for the LD steel process was studied. The following results were obtained. It is considered that the measurement of hot static elastic modulus is an effective evaluation method to improve the mechanical spalling resistance of basic bricks. It is considered that MgO-Sp bricks having small hot static elastic modulus, large maximum stress and less structural deterioration of the brick by repetitive stress under high temperature are the most suitable material for cement rotary kilns in order to reduce the mechanical spalling damage caused by an influence of the shell stress. It is desirable that changes in the hot static elastic modulus with temperature are small to suppress thermal stress produced by the temperature gradient inside the MgO-C bricks lining the LD process and to improve the mechanical spalling resistance. In future, the improvement of the evaluation accuracy of thermal and mechanical spalling resistance is expected by combining the hot strength with the thermal expansion characteristics under load, etc.
