The base of our hot air balloon group is located in Oku town, Okayama prefecture. It is adjacent to Bizen city whose refractory production is the highest in the country. Oku is a rural town with an idyllic landscape, where rice harvest starts en masse in the middle of October. The time of harvest here is a little later than in the neighboring areas probably because of the climate peculiar to the Seto Inland Sea or differences in the variety of rice. When rice harvest is over, the hot air balloon season starts. It was five years ago that I was invited to a hot air balloon flight by chance and taken with its incredible excitement. Since then, when the season comes, I get up earlier on weekends than weekdays.
