内容简介ESEM, the environmental SEM, is establishing a distinct field of use in comparison with the conventional low vacuum SEM. As typical application examples, an ESEM with cooling has been shown to be useful for observation of cement hydration, and with heating, observation of sintering and recrystallization of ceramics and other materials. Moreover, observation at higher temperature (more than 1000 deg C) and higher magnification (more than X 20,000) in situ are anticipated. In the present paper, features of the ESEM have been introduced focusing on the observation of ceramics and related problems. In the future, more advanced applications will be developed in this field.
