内容简介This paper summarizes the refractories used and the damage that occurs in waste disposal systems, such as incinerators and waste melting furnaces. First, the current status of waste disposal is explained, followed by a review of the equipment and the refractories used therein, and a discussion of the mechanisms by which refractories are damaged in incinerators and melting furnaces. The prevalence of contagious disease in the Meiji twenties (in the 1890's) touched off the treatment of municipal waste by incineration, with the main purpose of sanitary disposal. Since that time, waste treatment by incineration has increased further in Japan, with the aim of decreasing the volume of waste, because of the difficulty of maintaining land-fills, due to the limited space. At present, 50 million tons of municipal waste are produced each year, and 70 percent of that waste is treated by incineration.
