The following factors were found to result from the use of special graphite instead of ordinary flake graphite in MgO-C bricks containing 8 percent or less graphite:1) Modulus of rupture tended to decrease more for increased graphite content in the samples containing special graphite than for the samples containing flake graphite. Modulus of elasticity also showed the same tendency.2) Fracture energy was greater in samples containing special graphite than the samples containing flake graphite. The difference between them appeared in the case of graphite content over 4 percent and this difference became more significant for higher graphite content, up to 8 percent.3) It was found that a significant effect was obtained for samples containing over 6 percent of special graphite. This result coincided exactly with the fracture energy, Rst.As mentioned above, it is considered that special graphite is an effective material for improving the spalling resistance of low carbon MgO-C bricks. In the future, the practical application of technology increasing Rst should be considered for MgO bricks.
