It was thirty-seven years ago that I began to work in the refractory industry just after graduating from college. Since then, I have been engaged in the R & D, production, and sales of refractories, supporting high temperature industries. During these years, refractory technology has undergone significant changes with the times. In the decade after 1965, large-scale integrated seaside steel plants were constructed one after another in Japan. In response to this construction rush, a large tonnage of construction refractories was produced for coke ovens, hot stoves, and blast furnaces. The demand for work refractories for iron and steel making also increased every year. Refractory and refractory-related industries thrived, the result of which was a record refractory production of 3.71 million tons in 1970.
