Refractories that contain carbon raw materials such as graphite have been widely used in various vessels for hot metal and molten steel because of their high durability owing to the high thermal conductivity and non-wettability of carbon. Recently, various low carbon MgO-C lining bricks have been developed ~(1-3) to meet increasingly tougher demands placed on low carbon steel as a result of increases in high grade steel products. Their spalling resistance, however, is yet to be improved. The effect of the addition of fine carbon powder to the matrix as a means to improve the spalling resistance was investigated and the results are presented in this paper.
