In the No. 2 Steelmaking Shop of Kure Steelworks, Nisshin Steel Co., Ltd., the effect of more insulating ladle linings on the molten steel temperature change was studied, with the following results : (1) The results were different for the heat transfer calculations and the field tests for the cases with a sidewall castable of lower thermal conductivity and for a lining structure with backside insulation. It was considered that this difference was due to an increase of the thermal conductivity caused by slag penetration during operation. (2) The molten steel temperature was 2 deg C higher by using MgO-C bricks of low thermal conductivity in the slagline, which corresponded well with the value predicted by heat transfer calculation. This lining proved to be effective in the field because it did not show an increase in the refractory cost.
