The investigation of sintering accompanied by the reaction BCxN + xSi->BN + xSiC led to the following conclusions: The sintering mechanism of the BN + SiC composite ceramics whose starting raw materials are BCN and metallic Si is thought to be the following Metallic Si is molten at the sintering temperature and extracts carbon from the BCN producing SiC. The BN left behind in the reaction is in the hexagonal crystal form. With sintering under pressure of (hot-pressing), the texture of the ceramics becomes extremely dense, and consequently comparing with the case of the reduced pressure sintering, the BN crystals are remarkably larger. · The new method in which BCN+Si are used as the starting raw materials and the composite BN+SiC ceramic is synthesized directly in a chemical reaction is inexpensive and is practical for large scale manufacture compared with the conventional methods using BN+SiC as raw materials plus sintering aids. · The modulus of rupture of the composite ceramics obtained by the new sintering method was about twice that of composites made by the conventional method.
