内容简介As a matter of fact, almost all materials scientists nowadays are aware of carbon nanotubes, tiny hollow cylinders made of a wrapped graphitic sheet and exhibiting diameters down to 4 A, whereas lengths up to hundreds of microns. These unigue nanostructures are awaiting a plenty of exciting practical applications in the near future. Since the aspect ratio of nanotubes is huge, density is extremely low, but the yield strength and the Young modulus break the world records for materials available on the Earth, these nanostructures are the only possible substances for construction of a long-dreaming cosmic elevators stretching from our planet to the universe and serving in simple mechanical pulling any cosmic staff, i. e. satellites, solar batteries, food and various equipments for cosmic tourists and scientists working on the Earth orbits. The nanotubes are also excellent current and heat conductors, the property which being paired with their negligibly low weight, made them a champion material in the future ultra-fast computer systems.
