Because of the adhesion mechanism, carbon-bonded gunning materials need a 1st binder to ensure initial adhesion until thermal setting and carbon bond formation occur. Our study showed that ① initial adhesion could be ensured by using activated magnesia in place of chemical binders as the 1st binder, and that ② 2 the addition of a small amount of an activated magnesia having a large specific surface area was effective.
