Analysis of used tundish linings helped us identify their wear mechanism. Findings obtained in the study were used to improve the conventional castable.(1) The main wear pattern that determines the tundish life is structural spalling caused by slag penetration.(2) In an attempt to suppress the slag penetration, we developed materials that contained higher amounts of silica fine powder. They proved to be effective in suppressing slag penetration, which we inferred, was attributed to increased the slag viscosity in the pores resulting from higher amounts of silica fine powder.(3) Field test confirmed a longer life of the tundish lining made of the improved material.
