The reaction and dissolution of Al2O3-SiC-C castables in blast furnace slag was evaluated by chemical analysis of slag after heating at 1400°C for 2. 4. and 10 h, in castable crucibles with SiC contents of 40mass% and 80mass%. The slag composition changed toward the castable composition due to the SiC completely oxidizing to form SiO2. Depending on the results, the overall reaction rate coefficients for the castables dissolution into the slag were determined as 2.56 x 10 -7 ms-1for the 40%-SiC castable and 1.85 x 10-7ms-1 for the 80%-SiC castable. Based on the chemical analysis and microstructure evaluation, the dissolution process was concluded to include the following key factors. (1 ) Slag penetrates into the Al2O3-SiC-C castables. (2) SiC in the castables is oxidized by oxygen supplied though a slag film. (3) The material with oxidized SiC dissolves into slag immediately.
