In the drying process of monolithic castable refractory construction, explosive breaking of the cast body can occur. The rate of water evaporation and water vapor pressure by evaporation are major factors contributing to these explosions. These factors were investigated experimentally and evaluated analytically. To preliminarily estimate optimal conditions for the drying process, while avoiding dangerous explosive breaking of the refractories, is analytically. quite feasible. The following factors were taken into account: the amount of water added, the permeability and the thickness of the cast body, the thennal conducting conditions of the inner and outer surfaces of the cast body, and the heating scheme for drying.
