Refractories from Europe have played a key role in the development of Europe's prime position in the World markets. The materials industries using high temperature processes requiring refractories started their progression with the industrial revolution during the early 19th century in Great Britain, spread to the continent during the middle of the 19th century, and reached their culminating position during the middle of the 20th century. At that time, the world was dominated by the triad of the European, American and Japanese economies.
