The response of seven different refractories to single-mode microwave exposure was examined. Although the surface temperature varied from refractory to refractory, the temperature clearly depended on the concentration of Al2O3 in the refractories. When tin concentration of Al2O3 was about 40%, the refractories reached the highest temperature (about 1050°C). while the temperatures of refractories with 10% Al2O3 and 62%) Al2O3 remained below 700°C. Using Al2O3-SiO2 mixtures, the effect of Al2O3 concentration ail the response to microwave exposure was experimentally confirmed. Some of the refractories were found to be effective as insulators for the microwave heating of materials.
