CMA refers to Calcium Magnesium Aluminates, which is porous synthetic material consisting of 70% ultrafine Al2O3-MgO spinel and 30% aluminate phases. The service life of MgO-C brick for ladle lining was improved remarkably when 5% CMA (2.5% 3-1mm and 2.5% 1-0mm) was introduced by substituting for fused MgO in same size and quantity. The used bricks after serving for 138 heats in 120t refining ladle were collected. Besides macro observation, postmortem investigation was carried out in terms of microstructural characterization with SEM and chemical composition measurement by EDS. There is a thin layer of protective slag coating on the hot surface. The used brick pieces jointed tightly together by condensed liquid phase, which is also covered on cold surface with 3-5mm in thickness.
