There is a method called the "Extrusion Pressure Measuring Method" that is used to assess the packing workability of tap-hole clay for the iron-making blast furnace. The manufacturing process has been well enough controlled so as to maintain a prescribed extrusion pressure value for the tap-hole clay. It is very serious issue for the tap-hole clay however nevertheless that there are various materials easy to control the extrusion pressure while difficult to control it. Because the tap-hole clay is manufactured by kneading fine refractory powders together with a highly viscous organic binder, it is possible to consider that the extrusion pressure of the clay is greatly influenced by the dispersion state of the binder, the kneading conditions (the kneading time) as well as the amount of binder. There are two kinds of tap-hole clays possessing different extrusion pressure behaviors depending on the kneading time (see Table 1 and Fig. 1).
