Clarification of the effect of the microstructure on the oxidation rate of magnesia-carbon refractories, used under reduced pressure for steelmaking in ladles, converters and decarburizing vessels, is important to improve the oxidation resistance of the refractories. Previous researchers reported that the overall oxidation process was controlled by the diffusion of oxygen through the porous decarburized layer, but little work has been done on the relationship between the oxidation rate and the microstructure of magnesia-carbon refractories. The authors have reported on the precise measurement of the oxidation rates for cubic samples using a thermo-balance3'. In this study, the relationship between the maximum grain size of magnesia and the oxidation rate of the magnesia-carbon refractory was evaluated.
