By microwave firing, the surface temperature of a burnt substance is lowered by heat radiation. Covering the substance with pyrogenetic material as the external heat source is necessary for heating the substance uniformly. Hereinafter, the pyrogenetic material is called a susceptor. If the susceptor is not introduced, temperature gradient in the substance must increase and thermal runaway may take placed. We studied the effect of susceptors made of high alumina refractories on the microwave sintering of an alumina ceramic.
